Always the teacher, Nina wants us all to be aware of a useful (and sometimes life-saving) tip. Particularly, that we should all put “In Case of Emergency” (ICE) information on our phones.

Various articles, like this, give instructions for how to add this information to your phone. The following instructions are taken verbatim from techguylabs:

If you’ve been in an accident or have suffered a major medical event that leaves you incapacitated, one of the first things that first responders will check is your phone for medical information or an emergency contact. Modern smartphones have created standards for this, and have made it easy for users to put in their information so that first responders have easy access to it.

Following are instructions on how to put in your information on various phone types:

iPhone

Apple has incorporated emergency information into its Health app. Just open the Health app, tap on the “Medical ID” tab, and then tap “Edit.” You can enter medical conditions, notes, allergies and reactions, medications, blood type, whether or not you’re an organ donor, and emergency contacts. Now that information will be available to anyone from the lock screen by tapping “Emergency” and then “Medical ID.”

Android

There are a couple of ways you can add your emergency info to the lock screen. Android lets you simply put a message up on your lock screen, where you could put whatever information you’d like. This could even be contact info in case the phone is lost. To do this, open the Settings app, and tap “Security & location.” Next to “Screen lock,” tap “Settings.” Then tap on “Lock screen message.” Enter the message and tap “Save.”

You can also use Android’s built-in emergency information feature. To add your info to that, open the Settings app and tap “System > About phone > Emergency information.” You can enter whatever information you’d like to share. For medical information, tap on “Edit information.” If you don’t see “Edit information,” you may need to tap “Info” first. There’s also a section there for emergency contacts, and you can just tap “Add contact.” If you don’t see “Add contact” to tap on, you may have to first tap “Contacts.” Then, anyone will be able to get to that info by swiping up on the lock screen and tapping “Emergency,” then “Emergency information,” and then tapping on “Emergency information” when it flashes.

Samsung Devices

To add your medical information, first go to Settings and then tap “Lock screen and security > Info and app shortcuts > Owner information.” You can enter whatever information you’d like to appear on your lock screen, and then choose “Done.”

If you’d like to make it possible for someone to call your emergency contacts from the lock screen, you’ll need to add phone numbers to the “ICE (In Case of Emergency)” Contacts group in the contacts app.

First open the Contacts app, then tap the “Groups” button in the top right corner. Tap on the “ICE – emergency contacts” group, and add your emergency contacts. Then hit “Save.”

To enable the calling of emergency contacts from the lock screen, you’ll need to make sure your phone is locked first. Then go to the lock screen without actually unlocking it. Hold the phone icon and drag it to the center. When the keypad shows up, hit the “Emergency Call” button. Then you can add contacts from your emergency group by hitting the “+” symbol by each new contact. You can have up to 3 contacts from the ICE group.
